GEO audit: how to check what AI systems say about your business
A GEO audit checks how often and how accurately a business appears in AI answers. The key difference from "asked once and took a screenshot" is that this needs a repeatable method — otherwise the result depends on the wording and on luck.
What exactly gets measured
-
Whether the brand is mentioned in a relevant context across commercial scenarios.
-
How factually accurate the answer is — whether someone else's services or wrong contact details are attributed to you.
-
Which sources the system cites. Often it isn't your site but a directory or someone else's article.
How to assemble a test set
A minimum working set:
-
10-20 commercial scenarios: choosing a contractor, a question about price, a question about timelines.
-
10 expert questions on the topics you write about.
-
Local queries in the languages that matter — for Uzbekistan that's Russian and Uzbek at minimum.
-
Fact checks about the brand: address, services, contacts.
-
Negative tests: ask about outdated information or a project that doesn't exist and see whether the system confirms the invention.
How to record results
For each run, record the date, platform, language, the exact wording of the query, the full answer, every cited source, and in what capacity the brand was mentioned. Run the same scenario several times — answers aren't stable, and a single result proves nothing.
The technical side
Check that AI crawlers can read the site at all: server availability, robots.txt rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and others, no blocks at the CDN level. Plus a current sitemap, sensible internal linking, and business details that match between the site and external sources.
What content gets cited more readily
Specific definitions, comparison tables, checklists, descriptions of methods, original research. A "conclusion first, reasoning after" structure works — AI systems lift the first paragraph as the answer. Prices and legal terms must always carry a date.
What to do with the results
-
Fix technical availability and contradictions in contact details.
-
Close the gaps: if the system doesn't know what you do, it's because the site never states it explicitly.
-
Strengthen the pages that are already being cited.
-
Repeat the check monthly and keep the history — without it there's no telling whether things improved or you just got lucky.
